History

Forty three years ago, with the blessings of the Chairman & Senior Principal’s Mother, Smt. Kaligi Ranganathan Ammal, Montford English School was founded on 6-6-1970 with Kindergarten classes and 33 pupils, to be of service to young children in their formative years of life. The initial location was at Door No. 15, Bharathi Road, II Street, Perambur. We still hold on to it as an annexe to the later expansion on Anandavelu Street.

The school started with strength of 33 in 1970, soon became quite popular for Primary Edcuation in English Medium in these areas and the strength picked up fast. The name Montford was christened in memory of two great Yeomen – Simon De Montford, an English Statesman and Soldier, known for his Strict Discipline and good conduct in the English Army, and Saint Louis Marie De Montford, a world renowned Educationalist who was the first in the world to render an all round education for the total development of the young.

With growing pressure from the parents and driven by the increasing demands for Matriculation type of education, Standards VI & VII were introduced in 1985-86 and 1986-87 respectively. Smt. Kaligi Ammal Ranganathan Chettiar Educational Trust, Chennai – 11, named after the founder of the School was formed with Sri Ranganathan Chettiar as President. The school was named Smt. Kaligi Ranganathan Montford Matriculation School with due reverence to the founder of the educational trust. The Educational Department accorded the institution recognized as Matriculation School and permitted the classes from Standards VI to VIII in 1987-88 and subsequently permitted extension to standards IX & X in the succeeding years 1988-89 and 1989-90 respectively. The sudden demise of the founder of the school on 30th June 1988 was a shock and a set-back to the Institution. However, with the blessings of the departed soul, the school became a full-fledged matriculation school with Standard VI to Standard X in 1989-90 and the first set of pupils were presented for the Matriculation Public examination in March 1990, fulfilling the cherished desire of the Founder of the School, Smt. Kaligi Ranganathan Ammal.

The school has been upgraded as a Matriculation Higher Secondary School from 1990-91 and the first set of 94 pupils took the Higher Secondary Public Examination in March 1992. The Educational Trust always takes a keen interest in the growing demands for the Higher Secondary Institution and thanks to the Trust, the institution is now accommodated in a vast campus of about 1.5 Acres Campus in Anandavelu Street, Perambur. For strengthening the needs of additional accommodation, we secured a spacious additional building, exclusively for the Primary classes at No. 10, Bharathi Road, II Street, close by in 1994. And at No.15, Bharathi Road, II Street where the school was originally started in June 1970. In the year 2010-2011 a new building was constructed with the state of art facilities exclusively for the KG.

A temple for Lord Vigneswara and Goddess Saraswathi was consecrated on the 11th July 1993 in the School open quadrangle with due religious observance. It is the cherished desire of the institution to provide quality education through devotion and dedication and to instill in the children, a true sense of discipline.

The Institution celebrated the Silver Jubilee on the 24th July 1995 in a fitting manner. The Silver Jubilee Building, named after the founder member of the Trust Board Late Thiru. A.K. Venkatrama Chettiar came up in 1997 with 14 class rooms, laboratories for Computer, Physics and Chemistry and halls for library and Indoor Games.
